"There are no dual-core CPUs that will work in a Socket 478 board. The fastest Socket 478 CPU is a 3.4 GHz single-core, two-threaded unit (the 3.4 GHz Extreme Edition.) Dual-core CPUs were only released for the newer LGA775 socket, none were released for 478."

No, socket 478 is for single core Pentium 4 processors and the Celeron models based on them. Any computer with this processor socket is long overdue for being thrown out, spending money on attempting to upgrade such an old computer is a complete waste of time. As Andrew has pointed out there are some Pentium4HT processors for that socket but only the last socket 478 boards support them, most of the P4HT chips are designed for socket 775.

You have to check the chipset on your motherboard first, some chipset support only up to a certain FSB speed and beyond that they can't. I don't many places where you can still buy a 478 socket processor though.

it's more complex than that, i'm afraid. just because a processor is 478 does NOT mean that it will WORK in your motherboard, despite that it will fit. a motherboard MUST support it outright, or else it will not be capable of booting up at all!

if you let us know the motherboard model number (should be printed on the board somewhere) and/or the PC's maufacturer (if it was pre-built), we can get you a link that will tell you EXACTLY which CPUs will work with your PC :)

feel free to send me an email to that effect!

Nope. There are only Celerons and Pentium 4's.

    Just forget it.

No, but, get a Hyper-threaded Pentium 4 and you will see measurable gains in performance
