11year old daughter diagnosed with mumps....?

My daughter was diagnosed with mumps on 2/15....The week prior she was diagnosed with strep....symptoms of soreness in her left jaw area started beginning of Feb. We thought it was a toothache from molar coming in at first. On 2/15 her jaw was very swollen and hard, but she said it didnt really hurt. Dr.at ER did physical exam of swollen area, ruled out tooth abcess and said he thought it was mumps. Said her symptoms are not as bad since she has MMR vaccination.....my concern is that the swelling has not gotten ANY better. Nurse at school and County Health Dept. have both told me they do not believe she has mumps. If it is not mumps, what else could this be?????

She may have had the strep infection spread. Adolescents and adults experience swelling in the groin and armpits since this is where the lymph glands are. She may have atypical/serotype mumps. Do not give aspirin as this may lead to Reyes Syndrome.

The mumps component of the MMR offers lousy protection from the disease.

Hopefully, if she has had mumps, she will develop natural lifetime immunity and protection.

Mumps usually shows as inflammation of the parotid gland in the cheek area. Lots of things can cause this- a blocked salivary gland duct, other bacterial or viral infection, or inflammation of the gland from other causes. I would agree with getting blood tests to look for evidence of mumps. That is the only way to really know.

Edit: If this is, in fact, mumps, it is completely typical. Nothing "atypical" about it. I have no idea what "atypical/serotype" mumps is supposed to mean, but atypical mumps means mumps diagnosed by blood testing without the symptoms. If she has had 2 doses of MMR vaccine, it would be less likely, but possible. Studies show the vaccine is anywhere from 90-97% effective. Before the vaccine was introduced in the US, there were over 200,000 cases of mumps per year. In the past 20 years, there have been fewer than 1000 cases in most years, with several outbreaks of 6000-7000 cases. Hardly a "lousy" vaccine.

You should ask for a blood test, that would nail it I think. You might also consider taking her to the dentist for his opinion, it is not unheard of for wisdom teeth to start coming through at a young age. I had mumps when I was 8 (no MMR in those days) and I remember both sides of my face being very painful indeed.

dont allow her, shes a long way too younger, the age at the website online is thirteen. shes too younger to be striking her individual knowledge and graphics up on the web for each person to peer, and its now not as individual as each person thinks, its so convenient to get right into a strangers profile. my buddy can hack right into a profile in like half-hour, if a 17 12 months historical can do it, a creeper can do it too. she rather has no reason for one besides, and "all my peers have one" isn't a well cause. you by no means recognize whos on there, a few creep would fake to be a bit woman from her tuition, creating a false profile is so convenient. its now not risk-free for a tender child.
