At the top of the page, write down the product or service you offer. Underline it. Now below that, write down as many keywords related to your retail business that you can think of. The more words, the better.Once you run out of keywords, grab a thesaurus or use an online synonym finder to continue searching for keywords. The idea here is to find exciting and interesting words you may not normally use. By adding to the list with phrases or words of similar (and even opposite) meanings, your word list will grow exponentially. Add these new words to our list

If I were starting a maternity store and sold mostly clothing, I would write down Maternity Clothing. My keywords may look like; maternity, baby, clothing, pregnancy, breastfeeding ... you get the picture.Under the words maternity, pregnancy, baby, etc., I would add these words to my growing list; maternity wear, due dates, new arrivals, mother-to-be, reproduction, babe, precious, bambino, little darling.

I have to agree with the guy with the green complexion. If you are not willing to take the time to at least view your prospect's web site and learn how your product or service might improve their business, then you are clearly not all that passionate about your business. As a Director of Marketing, I receive cold calls all the time (when my assistant slips up and lets them through), and I can instantly tell which callers have taken the time to research my business. When I receive a call from someone who has invested the time to learn about my business, I am so much more willing to speak with them. It won't matter how well scripted your cold call is, or how well you have rehearsed it, if you cannot speak to the concerns of your prospect. Successful selling comes down to finding "the bones in the throat." If you can find the bone in your customer's throat and relieve them of that problem, you will be so much more successful. And rather than making 50 calls a day to make one sale, you could make half as many calls and make 10. But, like my green friend has already mentioned, if your heart isn't into doing that, it probably doesn't matter anyway. We've all had jobs we haven't liked - I once sold advertising display space and had to make cold calls, too, and I hated it. The best thing to do in those situations is to find something you do like and go after it. Good luck to you.
