Would you mind telling me about England?
It's my dream to go to Britain someday<3 It has almost everything I'd want in a place. I love the idea of it raining all the time. ( I hate Sunny days for the most part. They give me headaches, and I love the smell and feel of a cool rain. )
So, my question is if some people could please tell me what they know about England besides the obvious ( like they have a queen and a prince was married this year ) Maybe some stories, too?
Thank you~
BTW- I have no idea what category to put this in.
really, Ben?
Way to be helpful.
I don't believe you.

you dont say where you are, or your age.. so ill try and answer generally, but i guess youre at highschool in the US?
well, yes...the weather *is* horrible. you can find webcams all over the country, and get an idea of how its mainly grey skies. even the summer- is grey ;(
we're nt as polite and resrved as you might expect- watch some tv, and youll see... possibly the easiest way to come is to go to uni (university) here. im not sure of the price for US students; a good site to ask on is thestudentroom.com or - http://www.studylondon.ac.uk/application-advice/ad...
theres lots of american users on there. the most obvious difference youll notice is the price of things, esp petrol('gas' to you). food is more expensive, rent& house prices are way above what youd pay in the US. property is expensive cos we're a much smaller country- so we dont have much land to build on (obv we have to grow *some* food, so we cant concrete over every blade of grass). youve still got miles &miles of ancient forest, planes/praries. on the other hand, our higher taxes go to pay for a more generous welfare state, so we have less poverty. we keep getting documentaries about US people whove lost their houses in foreclosuers and live in their cars- including kids. terrifying. that doesnt happen here- tehy get housed. im not being rude, btw!! pls dont be offended! just explaining how money is spent- lots of americans complain bout prices without understanding the reason.
ANYWAY- politics over. well.. ha ha, kinda... though we were really bombed in the second world war, we still have lots of old buildings left. i grew up in a big victorian house, which isnt really thought of as old, &a medieval thatched cottage (which is considered old). most of our cities are an interesting mix of old & new; we try not to knock down old ones now, tho it still happens (& is sad!).
i live in london now, &i love walking round central london, most of which is victorian or regencey (jane austin period). its filthy & we are quite rude (tho not as bad as NY!!!) but i love it. its very exciting & inspiring. i miss the country which is serene, but near enough to visit- devon (where warhorse was set).
its probably a weird thing to say bt the best way to understand a nation is to understand its humour; watch some good tv- im not sure how much youll be able to watch from the US, but if you cant, i know the best shows are shown in the US- hunt for them. skins (there was a really bad american version of it- the english origional is breathtaking and i LOVE it- my avvy is one of the charcters), misfits, the IT crowd, fresh meat, 8 out of 10 cats... http://www.channel4.com/programmes/4od hope you can watch something- otherwise find those shows!
out uni system is different to yours- extra crric doesnt really count at all, and its a 3, nt 4 yr degree. we do one subject, nt a major and lots of others.it might suit you better. after that, its hard to get a job here unless youre qualified in something; you cant get bar work etc unless youre a student. we have florishing art, fashion, music, theatre etc industries, despite the recession.
walking in the countryside is easy, as there are small lanes everywhere- unlike the US which is main roads, with small private rds to houses & farms. we have rights of way- paths- over fields too. i love walking the coastal paths- & all our beaches are public.
come! we generally really like americans. ;D

As others have said, it doesn't rain as much as you might think. We have a maritime climate. It brings cloud. The west receives more rain than the east. We also get bright sunny days. It's very hard to predict our weather more than a few days in advance. Some summers can have periods of hot weather. Some summers are wash-outs. Winters can be mild, especially in the south of England.
We have some very big cities. London is the biggest. It's very cosmopolitan. The nearest US equivalent would probably be New York. Of course, it's much older and has lots of historic buildings.
Urban areas are very congested with traffic. The main routes between cities are very busy. Drivers from US are surprised at the volume of traffic and the fast speed that drivers dodge other drivers!
Although we are heavily populated, most of the land area is rural. People are concentrated in the towns and cities. The rural areas are very pretty. There is classic rolling farmland, fenland, woodland, moorland and mountains.
Life for someone in a big city is very different to someone living in the country. There are some rough areas in large towns and cities but they are not as big or as rough as some in big US cities. In rural areas, the pace of life is much slower.
We are more reserved than Americans. It's highly unlikely we would strike up a conversation with a complete stranger. However, we are not unfriendly. We make very good friends when you get to know us. We have a good sense of humour and love making fun of each other.
Come and visit. If you are American, you can stay here for up to 6 months without a visa. You will feel very welcome.

It really doesn't rain all that much but it's often overcast. We tend to have drizzle rather than proper rain. It's not all Harry Potter. Each city has grotty areas. We're generally not very friendly compared to people from other countries but we're no way near as bad as France. We have a problem with our teenagers which is almost unique to the UK. I've only experienced similar chaviness in Germany. Otherwise, it's an incredibly unique and beautiful country. There's old buildings everywhere you go and cosy pubs in every village. I think it's most beautiful in summer and winter. Very green in summer and the fields look spectacular in winter when they're covered in frost.

Stereotypically it rains all of the time....It doesnt actually rain that often.
Its cloudy and grey a lot, but rain isnt that common.
Ive lived in England. London to be more precise. Im leaving as soon as I can afford it.
No jobs here
Cost of living is sky high
Government are taxing us to death
You chose the right category though.

It rains quite a lot on the western side of England, but actually the east and south east have quite a dry climate. We have beautiful countryside, lots of history and culture, excellent public transport. I like living here

Its a shithole. Dont go there.
Enough said
