Do students( as a class) in other parts of the world give gifts to teachers for "appreciation?"?

I am wondering if in America students(as a class) give gifts to their teachers for Christmas or end- of- term appreciation?? it often causes dispute among the parents in our class whether it is the right thing to do or not . Afterall, a teacher is just doing his/her job .....? or not?

I'm curious to know how is it in other countries??

In America, people give little gifts to everyone!! The mail carrier, the cosmetologist you use, the vet for your dog...on and on.. And yes, a lot of students give gifts. I haven't seen too many give as a class, they usually just give on their own. Many do not. Some cannot afford it and the teacher absolutely knows this. They all do their own thing. I have received regifts!! and expensive gifts and just simply a thank you card written by child and parent. All were much appreciated. Some bake cookies, candy or cakes.

It depends on the socio economic region. My niece taught in an upscale school in New Jersey-she received gift certificates for $50 to local boutiques and stores. Whoa.

When I taught in Europe, I received gifts from Greek children, British children and Dutch children. It is a sign of appreciation. Of course it is our job, but, to think of someone, even with a card and thank you note, or regifted coffee mug, it is so appreciated. And, you probably don't know this, either. Teachers work for almost next to nothing. We are a "service" job and are paid very low compared to teachers in Europe. And most teachers work 50-60 hours a week for the same salary-no overtime. Not sure about other countries.

Also, it is a waitresses job, a doorman's job, a nail salon worker's job. Don't you tip? Those people receive a "little something" at Christmas, too.

I can totally understand not everyone wanting to get"on board" to a class gift. Just stand up and say, hey, let's just do what we can individually. I can promise you., Promise you-any worthy teacher would not think a thing about that. We appreciate any sign of appreciation. It is usually complaints and critiques we receive!!! Plus the occasional gift wrapped irate parent!!

A mug with a tea bag in it. Bubble Bath. Foot cream! (needed!!)

    Small tokens of appreciation!

I live in Australia, so I'm not sure if this is what your after

At my school we only give gifts to the teachers that we really like (Since I have about 10 different teachers that teach me) Or the ones that helped us most that year (Usually we give it to our form room teachers as we see them most often).

Its up to the students, its not compulsory to give gifts :)

No, at least not in my school or the surrounding area. It's not a bad thing to do but we don't give gifts as a class, instead we give gifts as individuals if we really feel that they did a good job. Hope that answers your questions!

Never did this or heard of it in the UK. Occasionally an individual child at primary school (to age 11)would bring something for a teacher.
