RHH: The Top 10 Most Important/Influential NRHH Albums in Hip Hop History (Sampling-Wise)?
Hopefully I'm not the only one on this site who's into listening to samples. I started to think of this the other day, and for my own pleasure I started to make this list of the most sampled and best sampled albums I've come across. So check if your interested, and tell me what you think. Anything I missed, albums you thought should've been ranked higher, ect.?
1 - In the Jungle Groove by James Brown: James Brown is probably the most sampled artist in the history of hip hop, so it's probably only right to put him on the top. As far as I can tell this album really had most of Brown was about and it was made while he was at his peak of his career. The number of artists who've sampled this album is unprecedented.
"Funky Drummer (Bonus Beat Reprise)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G9UV3kNoIQ
2 - Mothership Connection by Parliament: P-Funk samples are probably most notable in Dr. Dre, Bomb Squad, and other various westcoast guys. The sampling of their music really spands across all their albums, but this one in particular is where they were at their best in my opinion.
"Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Over the Sucker)" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ-9FpUh0q0&feature...
3 - Bongo Rock by The Incredible Bongo Band: The really unique, yet simple concept for this album was to make the drums the most prominent instrument of the band. It gained notablity when DJs such as Kool Herc & Grandmaster Flash started spinning it in the late seventies.
"Apache" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY-Z6wm6TMQ
4 - Superfly by Curtis Mayfield: Probably the epitome of blaxiploitation soundtracks, when at the time of this release were very popular among R&B artists at the time (e.g. Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, Aretha Franklin, and Barry White). The thing about this album is that it's still pretty popular to sample even with the number of times it's been used, most recently I believe it was used for "That Way".
"Pusherman" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCDAfa-NI-M&feature...
5 - One by Bob James - There's really only one standout track, which is "Nautilus". Used by a countless number of hip hop artists, such as RZA, Eric B. & Rakim, and DJ Premier, it's gotten a little played out over time, yet it's hard to deny it's influence.
"Nautilus" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcDoFUBAJYo
6 - Stand! by Sly & the Family Stone
"Sing a Simple Song" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVCQIYMvOLs (peep the drumbreak @2:11)
7 - Kool & the Gang (eponymous debut) by Kool & the Gang
"Give It Up" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WYT7JGJBUU
8 - The Heat is On by the Isley Brothers
"For the Love of You" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfqW384JSY8
9 - Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes
"Walk on By" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqR4CZj0mJQ
10 - The Awakening by Ahmad Jamal
"I Love Music" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDga7tJL2UU
Honorable mentions: Funkadelic by Funkadelic, Black Bach by Lamont Dozier, Salt of the Earth by Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers, Pain by the Ohio Players, Foxy Brown/The Mack by Willie Hutch, Light of Worlds by Kool & the Gang, and Street Songs by Rick James. + Young, Gifted, and Black by Aretha Franklin.
What are your thoughts?
BQ: Rate the last album you listened to.
Okay, bye.
@ittakesanation... - The reason I didn't put those sort of records like "The Champ" and "Good Times" is because the albums and artists that made those tracks didn't really have much of an influence outside of those songs (as far as I can tell),, so I considered that also. Both great tracks though. Same goes with a lot of random drumbreaks.
@Aaron B - To be honest I have not heard that entire album, I've heard a lot of various songs from Billy Paul over the months, but never took much time to pinpoint a particular release of his. As for the Persuasions, I wanted to include those singing groups like the O'Jays, Stylistics, Delfonics, and Temptations, but they didn't quite make the cut and I'd put those groups over them.

I would add Remember My Song by Labi Siffre, it's been sampled a bunch of times and I have it on mp3 (I wish I could cop it vinyl). Most famously it contains the sample to "My Name Is" and "Streets Is Watching".
I'd also put 360 Degrees by Billy Paul, commonly sampled by everyone.
Probably anything by The Impressions, Persuasions, and Harold Melvin deserves a nod.
Overall, a good list.
BQ:I listened to livelovea$ap for the fourth time or so. I'd give it a 7.75/10, same rating as on my blog.
edit: I meant The Persuaders, not The Persuasions.
I actually bought a Persuasions album with the thought of sampling it until I realized it was nothing but acapella singing.

I don't think I can come up with ten. But I know Paid In Full by Eric B. & Rakim was groundbreaking. It was most likely the album that popularized use of the Funky Drummer James Brown sample. The Blueprint by Jay Z also had brilliant sampling too, in which Kanye used vocal samples that he would gain critical praise for. The Low End Theory was good too, cause of the found link between jazz and rap. Good list by the way. I couldn't have done this.
BQ: J. Cole's Friday Night Lights 9/10.

Maybe Impeach the President by The Honeydrippers?
You are a f*cking genius.
BQ: Game Theory by the Roots, 9.5/10
