I am restoring a pie safe and i'd like to know what the metal panels are made of.?
The motif is one pin hole surrounded by 2 circles bound by a diamond or X pattern, if that helps to date it? I thought they were tin but theres rust? and all the tin roofs I seen dont rust. A magnet will stick. also like to know how to keep them flattened until I re-assemble the safe. I stripped paint and enlarged air holes and they have become warped. Thanks in Advance.
Must be iron then, they were to poor to have gotten any kind of steel, in the early 1900s, in SC. Thanx.

Most pie safes used simple steel sheets. You will find that strictly speaking they are not iron. Steel wasn't that expensive and was easy to work. Some of the sheet steel was galvanized to prevent rust others were oiled or painted.
As to making the sheets flat again. That is going to be a real problem. Once sheet metal become deformed it is almost impossible to flatten again.

Most of the pie safe panels are made of tin plated steel. Tin alone is really soft and would not hold up well.
eBay is an excellent source for replacement panels. Both tin and copper.
Placing them between two flat boards will keep them flat.

The only metal that a magnet sticks to is steel or iron, I think you have sheet steel here. I think tin was the norm in the day, you may have a repair job. I think copper would be a good although unconventional choice also.
