As of March 4, the opening day starter (and the rotation as a whole) is completely up in the air. The candidates for a starting spot are Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton, Jason Hammel, Tommy Hunter, Wei-Yin Chen, and Alfredo Simon. The younger players (Matusz, Arrieta, and Britton) that still have options in their contract could start the season at AAA Norfolk, if for no other reason than to make room for the veterans that can't be sent down to the minors without clearing waivers. Simon has had experience in the bullpen and may start the season there.
As for the Opening Day starter, I'd say the smart money is on Hammel at this point. He's the most experienced starting pitcher on the staff.
I don't have any information on who will start the first Spring Training game. Actually the O's have two games on the same day to open Spring Training, so there will be two different starting pitchers.
