Human memory is reconstructive - meaning that we only remember major details, only to fill in the rest. We forget a great deal.
In the lab, we bring people in and tell them a short narrative. Afterwards, we ask them to recite it back to us. Two weeks later, we bring them in and have them recite it to us once again. Each and every time, the subjects remember the main points and fill in the rest.

A lot of stuff that seems unimportant to us at the time.
What's even more interesting is how little we actually see at times.
