Palm Oil as a global commodity?
I am trying to research information on the globalization of palm oil. Looking to pick companies that use palm oil and focus on the exploitation of the native workers harvesting the oil and looking at the market shares for these companies (as recent as possible) could you argue that it is a form of cultural imperialism as the exporting of this oil to the west is crucial to their economy. These products from the companies are globally consumed on a daily basis. Do you think that palm oil is a good to look at globalization and deregulation?
I know I have asked lots of questions but please help I'm finding myself a little overwhelmed by the topic and hope for some guidance.. any links or information please share with me.

you can get facts from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil#Regional_pro...
But your approach is wrong. For thousands of years, people live on subsistence farming, essentially working 12 hours a day just to growing food for themselves, with no time or resources to build decent homes or get electricity. Then a international company comes along, and offers them to work same 12 hours a day harvesting the oil, in exchange for enough money to buy better food than they had before, and also have houses with electric gadgets. And people agree to that. Are you saying they are worse off?
It is true that palm farmers have much lower quality of life than western consumers of palm oil. But you cannot really call this a problem. Quality of life is proportional to how rare and useful is the product that you provide, and it turns out that palm oil is a lot easier to produce than electricity. When you go see a dentist, ask him how big of a house he has. Chances are, your dentist has higher quality of life than you do, but that does not bother you.
You know that becoming a dentist is quite hard, and having healthy teeth is really important, so a dentist is justified in having better life than you. Likewise, western consumers are justified in having better life than palm farmers since the electricity that we give them is a lot more useful and harder to produce than the oil than they give us.
Instead, you should be talking about how exports provide an opportunity for country to develop. The revenues from farm products could be used to build cities and factories, further increasing quality of life. Normally, exporting farm products is quite hard as most developed countries have trade barriers aimed at protecting domestic farmers:

Palms are one of the few things that developed countries can't grow (b/c of climate), so there are a lot less trade barriers on Palm Oil, and exporting it is an excellent source of money for the country.
