Canon or Nikon and why?
Which one do you prefer and why? Where is Canon strong where Nikon lacks and vise versa?
P.S. Hi fhotoace, I know you're reading this.

Where is Canon strong? Advertising. Look around, the masses use Canon. Where is Nikon strong? Technology. More pros prefer it. Where do I belong? Pentax, because the world isn't divided into C's and N's.

Nikon seems to be on top this year. The D4 and the D800 are well beyond what people expected. Canon, on the other hand, disappointed many of their customers with the 5dmk3.
These two are constantly neck and neck with no one clearly being better all of the time.
I use Nikon because when I started, the D80 was the best camera I could afford between the two brands.
In actuality, I use Nikon, Fuji, and Mamiya then a Canon 1014 Super8

Canon but only because of my years of experience with the brand and my investment into the system. You can't put Canon lenses on a Nikon body, nor viceversa. It's not like USB printers, that you can use either with Windows or Mac OS X.
Both brands are strong and either one is a good choice for a beginning photographer. Generally fashion photographers prefer Nikon and sports photographers prefer Canon, but if you make just a little effort searching, you can find exceptions.

They're both excellent, with virtually no difference in quality when in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing.
I don't really have a preference either way, although I use Canon because it's what I was taught based off of in my Photography class.

Canon seems to have reach and things like sports locked down right now so that could be a plus. Otherwise I'm not going to get into this because I fear the onslaught ahead.
