What vehicle maintenance tip works for you?

For example, I use suction bulbs and pumps to pull the old fluid from my automatic transmission, brake reservoir, power steering reservoir and coolant reservoir. It works for me and extends the time between complete fluid flushes in my opinion.

Letting a mechanic do it. Someone that's a paid professional that knows what he is doing.

Well Ride that Tiger Down the River. Fluids used to lubricate heats up and cools down Moisture builds up in motor oil Brake fluid become dark and moisture lowers the boiling point. Neglecting any manufacture fluid change interval Do so at your own risk. Because with out proper service I will tell your (extended warranty) company the failure is do to no oil changes or because the transmission fluid as not serviced. Your second largest purchase will last longer drive safer and the mechanic will make money doing what (WE) do. Technicians doing oil change are able to look over the car for other problems. (Ride that Tiger) remind your passengers you don't do regular servicing. Hopefully your medical coverage per passenger is good enough. (just venting) I hate neglect hose cars when they come in require much more just to make them run again. MAINTENANCE TIP. Pull out that booklet in your glove box spend a couple hours to read it cover to cover. Put place marks in the book for items like resetting the clock(s) regular service intervals, and gasoline needed to run properly. I have seen several cars lately with water in there gasoline and poor quality old gasoline that barely runs. Gasoline prices spike then mechanics see fuel problems. perhaps those owners are draining fuel out of the chain saw lawn mower and other cans around there house (DON"T DO IT)

No offense - but that sounds like a waste of time.

I rarely (if ever) change transmission/brake/power steering fluid or coolant (or flush these systems) and I experience no negative effects or premature failure whatsoever.

While these are still suggested routine maintenance items (especially if you have a vehicle under warranty), most people waste money by doing them entirely too frequently with no gain.

It's amusing, because I have seen people with nearly identical vehicles and driving habits - one will religiously maintain their vehicle, while the other neglects all but basic oil/filter changes, and the religiously maintained vehicle breaks down every time you look at it wrong while the neglected one goes 150K+ with minimal problems.

Due to hygroscopic effect the brake fluid looses it boiling point. Its because of moisture of the atmosphere. its better to change brake fluid once a year if your vehicle has no special hygroscopic protective cap. Best is to bleed the brake system on all the wheels till fresh brake fluid emerges. The automatic gear boxes need spl attention. Using suction cups and pumps may be contaminating the fluid.

i THINK YOUR DOING THE RIGHT THING BECAUSE AT LEAST YOU KEEPING THE FLUIDS REPLENISHED WITH FRESH FLUIDS, [sorry caps], anyway I do this my self only with very extreme conditions of the fluid colorization changing to dirty or darker than normal. as far as the transmission , I don't touch that if the fluid is cherry red or if it was amber new and still is amber , and you can even smell it on the dip stick if its burnt ,it time to change it even if you suck it out and add new fluid ,your doing more than the aver person does.

Get the wife to do the servicing she's the engineer around here! My only input is scrubbing her down when she comes in all greasy!
