Homestay in Ecuador--tu vs. usted?
I'm in high school and am doing a homestay with an Ecuadorian family this summer, and I was wondering how tu and usted are used there. Should I use usted with my host family and the locals no matter what, even with people my own age? When, if ever, is it appropriate to use tu?

I would use "usted" with everyone your age and older to start. As you get to know those your age you can change over to "tu", but I would stick with usted for the adults out of respect.
