My ps3 was bought in new zealand, I live in the uk (different regions obviously) so I can't play any of my region 2 dvds and I can't get any apps like lovefilm because of the region difference. Is there a way to change the region settings of your ps3

No, the region is locked in. You might want to trade it in for a UK PS3 if you are going to be living there for a while.
