What are Italians and Spanish like?

My dad will be going to Afghanistan in a few months and will be staying on a Italian/Spanish military base. He wants me to find out about Italians and Spanish people and culture. So what are they like, what are they into, what can't you say or do around them?

This is a very generic question as Italians are not all the same. It depends on the cultural level and education level of the Italian and where he is coming from.

Northern Italy population and culture was influenced from France in the Western part and from Austria from the Easter part because of French and Austrian dominations in the history.

Southern Italy Population was influenced by the Greek, Spanish and Turkish domination along the history.

The most real Italians are probably the ones from the center (Latium, Umbria, Marche, Tuscany). Their roots are in the old Romans and Etruscan civilizations and were very much influenced by the Catholic Religion since the Pope had government powers over all the center of Italy for centuries.

Now, something that the majority of Italians have in common is the importance of the family. A family is not just a married couple with children in Italy but uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins etc.

Italians also have very high standards regarding food. Some friends say that Italians are food snob. This is absolutely true. They have also a very good taste for fashion and aesthetics in general. This is part of education for every Italian. This is how Italians are raised.

Italians are also pretty open to make friends and tend to be very open. Something very important is that an Italian tend to say what he thinks and will make a big fuss if he/she disagrees with something. There is no understatement in Italy. You will see big dramas, big quarrels but what is good about it is that while these are very noisy, they are going to be consumed right there and then and they often finish with making friends with the opposer after each one has screamed and shouted against the other.

While there is not a huge sense of patriotism in the everyday life (Italians like to complaint about governments) they all become very patriotic when there are soccer matches or any other sport match where Italy or an Italian athlete is involved.

Italians are very proud of their history, of their culture and of their country, especially when they are abroad.

Here is some data on Italians. I can't help with Spanish... I'm sorry.

Angy didn't explain the Italians as a whole, only the Southerners.

Italians aren't an ethnic group, before the unification Italy and Italians didn't exist, only many people having diverse cultures, habits, and local romance languages.

What Angy have written don't belong to northern Italy's culture, in the north we love our family, but a married couple means a husband, a wife and their sons, or just a husband and a wife. We love our parents, but they understand that a married couple has its life to live, when their sons get married, they don't invade their lives.

Aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins aren't the mainly part of our lives. They are important, but we don't necessarily meet them every Sunday, etc.

Big dramas in northern Italy don't exist, you won't never see two northern Italians arguing in the streets, or you won't see them screaming out loud, personally I have never had a big discussion with anybody nor my parents or my husband. About the discussions, when we argue with somebody is because we don't like that person and we don't make friends with him/her.

No, they're from Italy, now not Spain or Mexico. Why do men and women get disappointed while I submit my photograph or Attilio Brandi posts his photograph, to exhibit we don't seem to be darkish? Stop with the thumbs down. He's white. I have purple hair and I'm a lobster within the solar. We are Italian. Not all Italians are darkish or may also tan good!
