Try a couple of things:

1. Check the health of your battery, if its near 5000 mAh then its time for replacing the battery. Also use iStat or coconutBattery to determine the health of your battery.

2. Consider resetting your PMU (power management unit), usually this helps your mac by resetting all external devices. In your case, if you perform a reset of PMU, your charger will be RE-recognized by your mac and hopefully this may solve your problem.

3. Try replacing your charger, usually a bad charger connector can also cause battery to not being charged properly.

on the top right hand corner of the macbook , theres the battery symbol and the percentage in brackets. when i plug the charger in, it says "(Not Charging)" why does it do this?

my macbook does this to. usually right when you plug it in it takes a few seconds to process that it is in fact charging. But it is suppose to go away after those few seconds if it does not go away maybe the outlet that it is plugged into is not strong enough. if the outlet is old then it wont send a strong electrical charge. have you tried plugging it into another outlet? if it is still like this you should take it to your local computer store the battery inside your macbook might be damaged or old.

It's happening to my Toshiba. It still works, just keep it charged. It's either that your battery is old and need replaced. It can still work if you pull the charger out, but it will die in less than 1hr & 30min

My mac did this too not to long ago. It either means that you need to get your battery replaced or your charger is broken, i've had both things happen to me.

That is problem of charger conecter you have to change or repair for that conecter.
