Any hardwood or fruit wood such as cherry would be solid and beautiful. They would also be expensive.

An alternate is to use veneer plywood that will look like finished hardwood when you're done, but cost less and give you plywood's additional strength.

Cabinet grade plywood is usually available at lumberyards or your local home improvement store.

You can also use hardwood trim to hide the plywood edges. Just glue and finish nail the trim to the desk.

You can buy a 4'x8' piece of 3/4" thick plywood with one or both smooth sides. Normally comes rough on both sides used for roofing, underlayment on floors, etc. But in your case, you want at least the top to be smooth. I used cabinet grade birch for a similar project. I believe you can also find this in oak and maybe pine. About $30.> a sheet.

A well aged & dried furniture wood such as maple

cherry or walnut has a beautiful appearance but are

expensive to buy. Ash, poplar or other furniture

woods are somewhat less. Look for stock that has

attractive grain patterns that are enhanced by the

    stain & varnish.
