How common is the cam seal going out in a V70?
Have a 1998 V70 Volvo with a 2.4 Liter 5 cylinder engine. I had the oil changed two weeks ago. The oil then ran out on Thursday and the shop that did the oil change said the cam seal went out. Is this a common part to go out in these motors or what? It also has only 144K miles on it.

these engines are generally pretty dry, you may possibly have a crankcase ventilation problem.
since the advent of the 5 cyl. "white" engine i have never had to replace any seas under the timing cover. the only oil leaks have either been from the oil cooler seal "O"-rings or the turbo oil feed line gasket at the turbo
Source(s): note: if the crankcase vent system becomes blocked up [especially on a turbo car]. pressure inside the engine can become great enough to actually push a seal out of position. if this is the case you must also remove the intake manifold [for oil seperator access] and replace the seperator, seals, hoses and other related pieces particular to your modle [such as flame trap element [non-turbo cars only]]. this will add approx 100 dollars parts and 2 1/2 to 3 hours labor to the cam seal job. NOTE: IF CAM BELT [TIMING BELT] GOT ANY OIL ON IT REPLACE IT NOW, EVEN IF IT WAS ONLY RECENTLY DONE. if this ever breaks it is less expensive to replace the complete enginwith a low mileage used one, rather than to pull the cylinder head and fix the broken valves and guides - rogerLv 79 years ago
volvo are famous for stupid 5 dollar seals that cost a fortune to fix here is a website that can answer many questions " www.arfc.org/complaints/1998/volvo/v70 there were 198 complaints on file for that volvo. And if you go to carcomplaints.com you will find a link to a volvo site where it had several complaints. Volvo is well known for engine , transmission and electrical problems anytime after the 100,000 mile mark and can be extremely expensive to repair, due to parts being dealer only and imported from sweden, these parts are well traveled before ever getting to the usa.
