What it is meant to save, it does not save.
you are too young to remember, but back in the 1970's When James Earl Carter (d) Ga. was President, and we had a crisis called the Arab Oil Embargo, the soon to be deposed "worst President ever" came up with the idea that we go to daylight savings time permanently, so that people who were cooking dinner did not also have to run lights in the home. It was Winter-time, when it gets dark at 6PM. So now we'd have daylight till 7pm. Great Idea right?
Until School kids waiting for their bus in the morning were being run over by cars because they were waiting at bus stops in Pitch Black Darkness!

I used more lights when I was working because I had to be at work at 6:30 am so all but 2 months out of the year, it was dark when I got ready for work. Also it is daylight now until 9:30-10:00 pm in the evening almost all summer. Its pretty hard to get little kids to go to bed before dark. I think it is most favored by business people who get off work at 5 and still want to get in 18 holes after work. One thing I did like while I was still working was that I could still do my grocery shopping and yard work with more daylight but I would rather not switch at all. When everyone else went on Daylight Saving time, the programs on TV were all on an hour earlier so I got more sleep.

The number of heart attacks goes up by as much as 10% due to daylight savings time due to sleep deprivation. Quick, call Sebelius.

It was suppose to save candle lights so the lights were switched on latter and got up earlier. It was to benefit sportsman and retailers. It was first mentioned by Benjamin franklin in the 1784 but was only introduced in the 1885 by George Vernon Hudson.
Also note some places in the west are now considering stopping the day light saving practice. In Asia the idea of day light saving does not exist
