What to do about squirrels?

We live in the deep south and some vegetables are already coming up. We have nice green peppers and a number of herbs. The squirrels have them for lunch, even before we can look at them. Anything humane we can try.? I have tried tabasco sauce around the plants and other similar things, but no luck so far.

A fence with a top on it will keep the squirrels out and they can reach in through a fence and get what they can reach.

Know what you mean. I put a small aloe vera plant on the porch and something ate it. The squirrels eat the bitter pears off our pear tree. We don't want them anyway.

Source(s): We have a big cage and I am going to put it over some plants to keep the squirrels out. And I have big containers sitting on tables that Im going to put some squash and cucumbers in. So far the squirrels have not crawled up the table legs. In Texas.

    Shoot them.
