Finally! A Breath of fresh air.... (Technical / Progressive Death metal)?

Well..I've been noticing..the technical death metal albums that have come out over the past 2-3 years..very few of them have been really noteworthy..in short..i started feeling that this genre has gotten stagnant!

But then last week, i came across this album by a band called 'OUTCAST'..Album is called 'Awaken the Reason'..This was released on 20th Feb this year.

Now this album was such a pleasant surprise! I immediately loved the vibe i got from the first song..reminded me of a mix of Sadist and Meshuggah! So just want to share it with you guys and see what you think of this album..

MQ1 : Opinions on this album?

MQ2 : Favourite Technical / Progressive Death Metal albums?

BQ : Your opinion on the technical DM genre in general? Do you think it is getting stale / saturated?

    Holla, how ya doin buddy?

I'm a little bit on the busy side (my city is being freakin' bombed) but I'll try to tackle it in a bit. I haven't listened to much technical/ prog lately... see what I can do ;)

Alright, first lets list the bands which might have influenced outcast/ share similar sound: Revocation (riffs), Psycroptic, Gogira, Meshuggah, Textures, Scarve,

Sound: Djenty rhythms, Gogira-esque vocals, gorgeous tech guitar, fat massive bass, Textures production, refined Tech/ Prog structure on Thrashy foundations, Groove approach laced with prog and tech & lashed with Melody.

The guitar isn't extremely distorted/ crunchy which allows the fat bass to shine. The vocals might well be monotonous, as is the music so there's definitely danger of boring the inattentive audience. The chaotic structure and incessant time shifts are really hard to stomach from a Pop point of view since there's not enough time to grow comfortable with the music and let it saturate you.

The drums are of course great as expected from a Tech band but I'm not really sure if I like them all that much. The drums have to strike a chord, carry some sort of flair to them to really make a lasting impression so I'll have to keep listening.

It's clear they've put a lot of thought and effort to the record and really wanna push the songwriting and variety up a notch but the album, as are most tech/ prog records might be a bit boring by the 30 minute mark. The groove/ thrash and djent/ massive chords with refined tech lead guitar, as well as some really unique elements shown in other songs and the pummeling bass keep things in check, but yeah... the danger is lurking, gumshoeing furtively so keep that in mind.

MA2: sorry I'm still a newbie, I've been regressing to Blues lately actually XDXD

BA Overall, really refreshing stuff but I'm not sure how long it would last. I'm VERY poorly versed in Tech metal but from what I see, the genre can easily become very stale and fusty. As for Death metal, it's a big genre - lets give it another year or two to marinate, even being stuck in a rot is far from a Death sentence. As long as there's something br00tal (!!!) out there it's all good ;P

Source(s): Solid album the first track is lots of fun indeed :D sorry for the messy review me ain't feeling very snazzy... (~_^)

MQ1: yeah it's quite good, but I'm not THAT big on tech death, I guess for the reason you said, album after album of self indulgent w4nk that forgot to be memorable or catchy.

    It's like a groovier Psycroptic.

(edit) the song Abysmal frustrates me, they show me a lush melody and then immediately take it away, replacing it with more djentified blasting.

    MQ2:

Crimson 2 by Edge of Sanity

    The conductor's departure by Anata

and then you'll beg by Cryptopsy

    Organic Hallucinosis by Decapitated

everything Opeth did up to and including Deliverance.

    Rareform by After the Burial

BQ: yes, it's stale, I don't go "wow! so technical!" I go "wow... so technical, good job ar5ehole" in a really sarcastic tone.

I'm not exactly waiting around for good tech death or even regular death, the last 3 albums I bought are "Cruel Melody" by Black light Burns, "No Heroes" by Converge, and "Eclipse" by Veil of Maya.

Actually VoM is pretty technical too, are they DM though? All the frickin genres get confusing.

Technical lack of existence metallic the only bands I hearken to which will remember as PDM are Obscura, lack of existence, Gojira, Anomalous, Opeth and In Mourning. All suggestions-blowing bands, yet I hearken to Tech lack of existence more advantageous, plus i do not likely attempt to interrupt Prog metallic down into sub-subgenres, and actual the imagine of of the aforementioned bands as present day-day metallic (yep, i understand lack of existence could also remember as previous college too). If it grew to change into into the very inclusive tag of present day metallic vs Tech lack of existence, actual the former. BQ: Opeth. once you're extremely more advantageous strict on the tag and do not count number decision them as PDM, then Anomalous. BQ2: Tie between Gorguts, Lykathea Aflame, Gigan and starting up position. l. a. would likely win prevalent though. BQ3: Hate everlasting's Phoenix between the Ashes

I found out about these guys through The Bridal Procession (amazing band). One of the TBP's guitarists plays with Outcast. I heard them on their facebook and they were awesome. I've been meaning to check them out
