I will be driving on PCH from LA to San Francisco.....?

I am planning a summer vacation and want to see LA and San Francisco. I am planning to drive on the PCH and spend one night half way through this drive. Any recommendations? Lodgings? A day at the beach would be awesome. Also is there any reason I should start my trip in San Francisco and end in LA?

Stay at the Best Western in Cambria or the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Have cash on hand if you stay in Cambria since most of the restaurants are cash only. The BW is across the 2 lane road from Moonstone Beach. Madonna Inn is just something you need to experience. I recommend making reservations for either hotel before you leave San Francisco.

A couple of regulars recommend Pismo Beach as a great beach to go to. I haven't gotten to visit it yet.

Reason? It's one of the most beautiful drives in the USA.

San Luis Obispo is roughly halfway between LA and the Bay Area on 101. The Madonna Inn is, of course, famously kitschy and probably worth staying in. Pismo Beach, just south of SLO might also take care of your beach needs. If you're looking for something a bit cheaper hop onto priceline and you'll have no trouble finding lots of hotels in the area.

Note however that SLO is south of Hearst Castle, Big Sur and the most spectacular stretch of the coast. You might shoot to spend another night in or around Monterey (which is also worth a day or two) before heading up to the Bay Area.

And it doesn't really matter whether you go from SF to LA or LA to SF.

You can call it PCH or Highway 1... no one cares.

Cambria is a great place to stop. There are a bunch of little hotels right across from the sand. All of them would be a good choice.

If you can make it as far as Big Sur, that's a neat place to stay and then explore the next day. Although if I were doing it again, I'd take more than one day/night for that trip.

The trip south to north is better because you're on the inside lane on the road.

Be sure and keep your eyes on the road. Stop if you want to gaze at the scenery [and you will!].

We dont call it PCH up here. It is the coast highway or Hwy 1 or even Cabrillo Hwy.
