mass effect 3 squad and friends question?

At the end of mass effect 3 going into the final battle you pick your 2 squadmates, you talk to all of your friends (jack, grunt, sumarra. jacob, etc.) and then you go in, my question is, who died and who lived!? In ME2 you got to see that..did your squadmates who were with you die from the lazerbeam going into the beam, did your friends live through the battle? How about at the end when your ship crashes, is the rest of your squad on that ship or were they fighting too? WTF bioware.
