A song that played during the first Gulf War?
I'm trying to remember a song I played as a DJ with the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service during the Persian Gulf War in 1990-1991. It was a re-release of a regular song which was already popular, by a well known artist, but it was re-released with audio clips from the news interspersed. It was a kind of mellow song by a male artist. I thought maybe it was Sting but I can't remember. It was definitely a well known male singer, though. I don't think it was a band, I think it was a solo artist. I could be wrong. Anyone remember this?
You're right Rusty, that Lee Greenwood song was pretty popular. But I'm sure it's not what I'm looking for. This song was a current popular song that had nothing to do with war, but then a new version came out with people talking, like clips from press conferences and the like. Really smooth and mellow... not much band accompaniment, kinda "unplugged."
I found it!!! Boy was I wrong about some things though! It WAS a band, and it WASN'T kinda "unplugged." Still pretty mellow, though.
It's "Show Me The Way (Desert Storm Remix) by Styx.

I want to say maybe Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". I know the song predates the Gulf War but came back into prominence as was being played all the time during the war. I vaguely remember hearing a version with audio news clips in it but I can't confirm that.
Edit: Glad you found it and posted it. I was getting curious. I actually saw a mention of Styx when I was looking but didn't look into it far enough.

Rolling Stones - High Wire About Operation Desert Storm: ''High Wire,'' the band's latest single, blames the war in the Middle East on the world's indiscriminate sale of arms to Iraq. ''We sell 'em missiles, we sell 'em tanks/We give 'em credit, you call up the bank,'' sings Mick Jagger. Although the single is sympathetic to the troops in the gulf, it has become a hot topic in Britain, where popular sentiment for the war has already forced two bands, Bomb the Bass and Massive Attack, to change their names. The BBC added ''High Wire'' to a list of songs that it discourages its DJs from playing and a Conservative member of Parliament called the record ''appalling in time of war.''

I think it was "Proud to be an American" - They made an edited version where a little girl was sending a message to her daddy.
