What is the proper name for the cardboard material from which houses and furniture are/is made?

There is a material that is made from cardboard, but it is strong like wood, and can be handled like wood as well. It is lightweight, paintable, etc, but I can't find it anywhere.

What is it called? where can I buy some?

I do not mean MDF / HDF, this stuff is not as heavy as that.

Update:

What I'm looking for is absolutely inflexible, and not hardboard. It's a modern material, and I've seen it on discovery channel too, that they build houses out of "cardboard"... which is like wood. Not corrugated normal cardboard boxes stuff.

It has it's own name....

You may be talking about what I call pressboard. It's 1/4 inch thick and comes in 4'x8' sheets that resemble paneling or tile. If that's what you mean it's used in mobile home walls and shower surrounds and can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's.

    Cardboard Like Material

I'm taking a flier here, but I'm betting you don't know that cardboard is the thin white stuff commonly called poster board, and that boxes are made of corrugated paper board. Don't ask me how I know, I just do. You are looking for multi-layered corrugated paper board, not easy to find on the street, if at all. Maybe the web? Google corrugated paper board, and your city. You're looking for a distributor of this product. You may have to do a national search. It comes in a wide range of thicknesses, in 4 x 8 sheets.

Source(s): Did a project for a school, built the front of a castle, including a portcullis, out of this material. It was donated by a parent who worked for a distributor. This was in Buffalo,N.Y. if that helps as to where you are. I'm a carpenter.

I am taking a shot: Masonite or hardboard? It is tempered and sheets are 4'X8'. The other might be a product used as a sheathing in the '80's which is a pressed paper core with aluminum facing, it was called R Max or Hi R , it was 1/4" thick and came in 4'X8' sheets. It is no longer made.

Never. It would create a massive fire hazard and you probably wouldn't be able to get insurance.
