Brighton is good fun if you have teenagers or older children. But it's not the best for very young children and the beach is pebbles so sandcastles are not practical. It has some good shopping and eating in "The Lanes" can be interesting. There is the world's oldest electric railway running along the beach (the Volks railway), a large modern "Ferris wheel" and a nudist beach - so watch out! Brighton is a working town (now a city) and has two universities so it is crowded and can be relatively expensive compared with the other options.

Bournemouth is a great all-round resort with things to occupy adults as well as children. The beach is much better than Brighton. You also have easy access to the New Forest which is well worth a day out to visit. There is a smaller university but you won't be crowded out by students, and it's a bit cheaper to stay in than Brighton.

Torquay and Paignton are a conurbation in South Devon. These are absolutely superb family resorts with loads of entertainment for people from the very young to the ancient, and all grades in between. The beaches are excellent, the hotels, cafes and restaurants are not exorbitant (except for the Shoreline restaurant in Paignton which is definitely not good value in my opinion). There is also the South Devon Railway which runs steam trains to Dartmouth and easy access to Dartmoor.

Swanage is a smaller (but not tiny) resort in south Dorset (the scenic Purbeck Hills). It has a steam railway, great coastline, good beach, not expensive and is on the Jurassic Coast so you should expect to see some fossils around. Nearby is Corfe Castle which is well worth a visit (by steam train) and can be fun for anyone who can walk up the hill.

All of these are easy to get to by road or rail and safe to stay in. For a general family break I recommend Paignton as first choice; Swanage second; Bournemouth third; Brighton fourth.

The Isle of Wight is bursting at the seams with attractions for all ages. Kids love the short sea trip across the Solent, too.

If your not from London, visit there. I love visiting London, so much to do.

You could visit Leeds Castle, which confusingly is in Kent.

There is Blenheim Palace near Oxford, it has a kids area and is a beautiful palace- the birthplace of Winstin Churchill.

That's all I know off, isn't there a "visit the south-east" or similar site.
