You can choose VLC player.
It's a open source application and you can run almost all multimedia format file.
I see some one has suggested Real player, but it doesn't play audio of certain formats

Personally, I prefer foobar 2000 or VLC player, depending on what functionality of Windows Media Player you're looking to replace with a different application.

Strange, I look down the answers and I don't see Real Player.
Real Player is great and it also has a facility to download You Tube and other videos. The basic (free) version is all that you need. It is, in my opinion, far better than VLC Player.
Downloadable from: http://uk.real.com/realplayer

- Media Player Classic HomeCinema (great DXVA support)
- CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) also installs it, w/ 10-bit H264 support
- MPlayer + frontend
- Shark007 codecs makes WMP usable, like, .mkv and 10-bit .H264.
- XBMC (media center-like)
VLC plays everything, has a ton of interesting options (save streaming, wallpaper, etc), but it lacks 10-bit support and I think it also doesn't support DXVA (hardware decoding) yet.

I personally enjoy the zune software. Cause it looks cool and it has an integrated music marketplace and zune music pass support. But there is always WinAmp which I remembered to be an amazing program.
