Problems with an old 1986 Dodge Ramcharger Royal SE?

I'm not exactly a car guy but I believe something may be wrong with my transmission...it's an automatic. Whenever I shift from park there's a clanking noise that sometimes jolts the entire truck. Also, when I get on the highway it takes me forever to get up to speed (55). It seems to get stuck at 25 even when hold the gas pedal to the floor until it eventually shifts, gets stuck at about 35 for a moment, then overdrive will kick in and it'll do 55. I checked the transmission fluid and it seems fine. I'm only 17 though and can't afford a mechanic so I'm hoping for something I can fix myself

James, this sounds like something that you can't fix yourself. Just a wild guess would be a ring and pinion problem in your differential. That would account for the clanking, jerking and low speed pickup due to binding. It would also tend to make howling noises from the back before it got completely destroyed. You could replace the entire rear end most cheaply as this is an expensive fix for a ring and pinion. And of course, there are a million other things none of which are cheap.

It doesn't have overdrive by the way, but have a good mechanic take it for a spin to evaluate it. I've owned about 8 ramchargers over the years and found them clunky, but never left me stranded, and put up with a lot of abuse..
