Can I get rid of Wii homebrew?

Hi,

I bought a refurbished Wii on eBay. When it arrived, it had a note with it telling me not to update. It had something called the Homebrew Channel on it. I never heard of this, but I looked it up, and I now understand what Homebrew does.

I don't want something illegal. I just want to play regular games, and I can’t afford the price of a new console.

So... my question is, can I get rid of Homebrew, and can I update my Wii? What will happen if I update? My friend told me I might not be able to play some newer games if I can't update.

Thanks :)

A Softmodded Wii isn't illegal, but it doesn't have any warranty support since the Homebrew Channel is a violation of Nintendo's Acceptable Usage Policy.

You CAN update your Wii, but doing so does present a small brick risk (if you're updating your Wii from 4.1 or older since the Wii menu 4.2 update includes a boot2 update) & can delete some of the softmodding, especially if it's outdated.

If you want to get rid of the Homebrew Channel, the easiest way to this is to run the HackMii Installer & uninstall everything.

    1) Go to http://bootmii.org/download/ & download latest version the HackMii Installer -- Unzip it & copy it your Wii's SD card. Make sure the folder goes into SD:\apps\

    2) Insert SD card into your Wii, load up the Homebrew Channel & then load up the HackMii installer

    3) Once you get to the HackMii menu, select "uninstall Homebrew Channel".

    4) After uninstalling the Homebrew Channel, select "BootMii" & then "uninstall Bootmii as IOS" -- This is needed because the HackMii installer automatically installs BootMii as an IOS in order to run the installer. When you uninstall it, you revoke the installer's ability to do anything & will automatically quit when it's done.

    5) You can then update your Wii as normal.

I will note that some games (including new releases, like Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) typically include Wii Menu updates that's needed for the game to run. If your Wii is currently running required version of the Wii Menu or higher, your Wii will ignore the update & load the game normally.

If your Wii doesn't have the necessary Wii Menu version, the Wii will load up the "Wii Menu Update" in the disc channel.

    Hope this helps!

through the Wii settings menu navigate to "data management" and remove it, tho this will not remove some log files, which may or may not void the warranty.

If you are technically inclined, your best bet would be to visit the home page of the program and spend about an hour, maybe two, learning what it is, what it does, how to use it and how to remove it. The Homebrew Channel itself isn't illegal, it is just an interface used when you want to use a Wii for other than it was intended or, in most peoples cases, something illegal like copyright infringement.

edit: As far as what will happen if you update with HomeBrew installed, you will need to provide a lot more information, like HBC version, Wii OS version, among other things. If you assume the role of someone that would want to keep HBC, and search Yahoo! or Google for something similar to "will I loose The HomeBrew Channel if I update", you will find many topics discussing this.

Having homebrew channel on your Wii isn't illegal. What you may do with it might be.

So if you want to play legit games on it, play legit games on it. There's nothing wrong with that.

You generally don't want to go through Nintendo's update process since it may brick the system, but remodding the system to a current mod will let you play all current games.

Check out wiihacks.com for information on a safe way to mod your system. There is still risk, but reading ahead, knowing what you're doing, and following directions carefully will minimize that risk.

Just update it, nothing has happened to mine whenever I update I just loose the homebrew channel and have to re-hack it. If your that worried then delete the channel first and then update the Wii.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axwzR

If you just update your wii from 4.1 to 4.3 with an official update, it will remove bootmii and the homebrew channel from your console. Don't worry about the console being banned, that won't happen.
