no
its android, but uses Amazon's own proprietary software and marketplace, it doesn't have access to the majority of google apps, and some apps it does have, are more expensive.
you can get full android-based tablets for the same price, like the Lenovo A1, which has full android, full google app access, even cameras for chat.

The only problem i've been having with mine is that its been freezing up lately. It didn't do that when i first got it. I'm a prime member, and have noticed that it doesn't charge tax like itunes does. I don't know about non prime members though. Its easier to carry around than an Ipad which my mom has. I don't know what your looking for, but it has a good selection of movies and tv shows. I don't really do apps that much so i don't know about them. Its also cheaper than an Ipad if your on a budget, but if you want a bigger screen, an ipad might be the way to go. The Kindle Fire has a 7.5 inch screen while the ipad has a 9.5 inch screen i believe.

i love mine..
perfect size for back pocket or inside jacket pocket. unlike larger tablets..
amazon apps store (can not use android market) has a free paid app every day.. some suck, but there has been some useful ones..
some negatives - no physical volume button, no expandable memory (sd card), no camera (although not a problem for me), while it has not been a limitation for me it only supports 2 touch points - some touch screen devices support up to 5 points of contact on the screen...
the google market place limitation i have been able to circumvent by going to developers websites and downloading the APK file for the app... or www.handango.com
i did start to make a blog but got side tracked.. there is some useful stuff in there for starting out with the fire http://kindlefirefanboy.blogspot.com/
