Monkey and the Hunter physics question?
The Monkey and the Hunter is a physics question so old that it has a heritage listing. As far as we know, it is purely imaginary. A monkey hangs from a tree. A hunter aims a rifle at him and fires. At the instant that the gun fires, the monkey lets go of the branch and begins to fall, thinking that he will thus fall below the trajectory of the bullet. (Monkeys don't study physics.) What happens?
I know that the monkey gets shot and dies but im stuck on how to prove it algebraically.
I have to make independent equations for the monkey and the bullet both in x any y directions.
I got the equation, which are
bullet
x=Vit
y=-1/2gt^2
monkey
y=-1/2gt^2

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the monkey is released from the branch at the exact moment that the bullet is fired from the gun then gravity will affect them both equally (assuming that the hunter has fired the gun horizontally or perpendicular to gravity). The monkey and the bullet will both trvel in the y direction at the same rate. As the bullet is also travelling in the x direction towards the monkey then the monkey is guaranteed to be hit.
