do you have to change a child's last name when adopted?

The grandparents want to adopt their grandchildren. We agreed to the adoption but do not want them to lose their father's name. Is it possible for the children to keep their the birth name?

It really isn't necessary, only advisable for really younger children to younger couples. If they were being adopted outside the family, it would be best. But since the grandparents are doing it, it's okay to leave it as is. Especially if the mother and father are going to be coming and going as part of their lives.
