I'm gonna stick to American artists, because to me, British Isles folk is a whole different trip... Also, I'm being fairly strict in my definition of "folk"; none of these have any electric instrumentation except for a little on Fred Neil's album and the Farinas' album..

Roscoe Holcomb - The High Lonesome Sound (1965)

Buffy St. Marie - It's My Way! (1964)

Doc Watson - Doc Watson (1963)

Fred Neil - Bleeker and MacDougal (1966)

Woodie Guthrie - Dust Bowl Ballads (1940)

Richard & Mimi Farina - Celebrations for a Grey Day (1965)

Lead Belly - Lead Belly Sings Folk Songs (1989)

Odetta - The Tin Angel (1954)

Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1962)

Pete Seeger - Dangerous Songs!? (1966)

    BQ: Holcomb

BQ2: Odetta or Buffy St. Marie

edit: D'oh, I forgot to mention what is my most favorite folk album of all, above all else: "Garden of Joy" (1967) by Jim Kweskin's Jug Band But that's an entirely different kind of folk than the ones in my list. Worth seeking out for fans of the 60's, psychedelic music, Americana, religious cults, Frank Zappa type stuff... But it is still completely a folk album.

    evening fructose,

seederman is right: folk does indeed mean something different to us in the united kingdom.

it's the music of the common people, sung/played down through the centuries, and mostly of great historical and socio-political import

my first introduction to music was through folk, and it's a love i've never lost

and before the traditionalists don their arran sweaters and stick their finger in their ear, electric is perfectly, wonderfully acceptable
