Why is my iPhone 4 battery life so bad?

I bought an iPhone 4 about 2 weeks ago. The battery life is terrible. For example, today I have fully charged it, and it's already at 83 percent with a usage time of 1 hour 11 minutes, and a standby time of 3 hours 52 minutes. I have done about 30 mins of gaming, but thats all. I have wifi on, 3 email accounts that fetch every hour. It seems to go down very fast. I would not have noticed this but I have friends who also have an iPhone 4, and they say, and they show me that they can go ages without charging, even when playing games.

Firstly, is this battery life normal?

Secondly, how should I improve my battery life?

P.S I have brightness at 50 percent, and no apps like skype running in the background. I do have kik though.

Thanks, I would appreciate any help. :)

I will choose a best answer if any of the answers help me. :)

Mine lasts a whole day with light usage on 3g with web browsing and texts. Games can vary playing intense 3d ones like infinity blade will KILL your phone in an hour or 2.

Tips to improve: turn of 3g, turn of bluetooth, turn of wifi and turn of all location data of to. It also helps to have the screen brightness on as low as you can. You will get about an extra hour or 2 doing this.

I dont think its a problem although if you do you can always ring up applecare.

In 30mins you can go down to 90% with brightness 50% or more maybe around 87 86 % of your battery also with wifi yeah around 83%

Try turning off Bluetooth and making brightness lower a bit

Brightness all the way down and adjust that when needed. Run a task manager so things like kik and your emaila aren't running for no reason and they can just fetch the things when you need them and yeah just doing that it should last you a full day. If it still dosent and the battery sucks, take it to apple and just get a new one.

it's a common problem of the iPhone, it's battery SUCKS

anyways just make sure to exit all apps in the background first

double tap the menu key, hold your finger on an app then close all :D

turn off mobile data "edge or 3G" data

    use 2G instead of 3G

Turn the brightness of the screen down, turn of wifi when you're not using it.

Turn off GPS, wifi, bluetooth, when you are not using it.

Set your email to download only when you request it (once an hour, that's paranoid).
