Why did NASCAR stop racing at Rockingham Speedway?

I loved the racing at the Rockingham Speedway! Rodger Penske owned it as well as Fontana and Michigan and was FORCED to sell to ISC to use the race dates at other tracks.

They stopped racing at Rockingham because there were too many Cup races in a very tiny area of the south, and the track never drew very many spectators.

NASCAR returned to Watkins Glen in 1986, after 21 years, because the modern NASCAR wanted a major race in New York, and has had a Cup race every year since.

The Rock was stuck with poor dates. February and November aren't great weather months in NC. Also, the track has a lot of competition - Charlotte, Darlington, Martinsville, Richmond. So there were many empty seats in an era where tracks were regularly selling out. So they lost one date and soon after a second date. I was lucky enough to be at that final race in '04 and Kenseth won in a photo finish. Shame. It was a very nice place to watch a race.

Too much competiton. You have a lot of tracks, especially short tracks, in that tri-state area. Bristol, Martinsville, Richmond, etc.

It also isn't very kind to fans. Not a lot of parking and seating.
