A little question about my Nokia E7.....?
First of all should I update the software to Belle from Symbian^3? And if I do will it still be compatible with the previously installed applications like Angry Birds? Also will it slow down the device?

1. I have an E7-00. It was always slow and flaky on the original firmware. It was not any better on Anna. It is significantly better on Belle. Performance and battery wise, it is a noticeable improvement. There is no wrong way to upgrade to Belle - unlike the previously provided answer 'if done right there is no slow down', there is only one immediately available way to upgrade and that is via Nokia Suite on a PC.
2. The update will wipe out all your apps, you'll need to reinstall them all when you're done. There's no way around this and back-ups don't save your apps, so be sure you know where to get your apps from again. Also note that app data (like game progress files) are not saved in teh backups; if you're ooh so close to beating a game you really enjoy, finish the game before updating because you'll be starting from scratch once you are on Belle.
3. Will it be compatible with older software? Maybe; almost certainly; but it is not guaranteed. Unlike the previous answer someone gave, I don't claim that software issues won't crop up. In fact, I've heard of several cases where apps people had on Anna or earlier don't work on Belle. Specifically, some widgets might not work properly. Overall though, you should find very few apps that ran on the original firmware but don't run on Belle. This shouldn't be an issue for you in the end.
4. The previous answer someone gave suggested that you keep the phone plugged in while updating. Don't go nuts trying to figure out how to do this, they obviously don't have an E7. You have one micro-USB port on the device, used both for charging and connectivity to the PC. There is no additional charge port. Nokia Suite will yell at you if your battery is below a safe threshold, so just follow the instructions given.
5. If you have any problems, perform a hard-reset of the device. If you are willing, also format the mass storage (E: drive). It is has been a long time since this approach was actually 'needed' on a Nokia device, but the old-school Nokians would want to do a 'clean' upgrade, with absolutely no chance of anything from the old firmware still laying around once the new one is installed. The ideal "clean" approach is this:
- Format the E: drive
- Hard reset (dial *#7370#)
- Upgrade the firmware
- Hard reset again
- Be happy with the new firmware
Again, #5 isn't needed - but since you'll be losing all your apps anyway and you can easily backup your E: drive data (pics, videos, files, etc) to your PC before formatting, it's a simple enough thing to do. If you're even remotely nervous, this is the way to go.
Belle is great - the E7 was significantly improved by Belle by pretty much every measure you can consider:
- performance
- stability
- free RAM
- free space on C: drive
- accessibility (new user interface features make settings, etc easy to get to)
- user experience (everything feels fresher, faster, more satisfying to use)
- value (want to sell your E7? potential buyers would almost certainly rather see Belle on it than wonder if they can do the upgrade)
I strongly recommend upgrading it. It is an easy and worthwhile task to perform.
Source(s): years of experience with nokia devices, I have owned and upgraded firmware on all of these relevant (symbian) devices: N95, N82, N97, 5800xm, X6, N8, E7. the last device in that list is the same device as yours and I have direct experience performing the upgrade you are considering. - Miss BeeLv 79 years ago
it shouldnt slow down the device if its done properly. Make sure ur battery is fully charged and its a good idea to keep the charger plugged in as updating uses a lot of power. Also ensure ur usb connection is secure.
Most people report that it actually makes the phones faster. I have an n8 but im staying on anna, i dont like some of the changes belle makes.
The os will always be symbian^3, anna and belle are just names used to identify the updates, so ur apps will still be compatible.
