You have a classmate that is taking the same test.
Sources of ozone:
- ionizing radiation (UV-215 and more energetic from our Sun, background radiation)
- static discharge
- photochemical production (NOx, VOC, and violet light from our Sun)
Functions of naturally occurring ozone on Earth:
- absorbs UV-215 thru UV-280, which protects DNA
- oxidizes odors, kills single celled organisms
- causes swelling and irritation of breathing structures of every organism that comes into contact with it
Causes of ozone depletion:
- increases in contaminants, such as water vapor, and / or molecules that contain chlorine or bromine... that arrive in the intense energy absorbed in the ozone layer.
Consequences of ozone depletion:
- increases in cataracts
- increases in cancer and mutation
- decreases in crop yields, and palatability of the crops that are produced
- loss of arable land as soil is sterilized
