Where did the concept of "Nail Polish" come from?

Who would ever come up with the idea of painting your nails, and that it's only for girls? What are your opinions?

:D I'm sure I could easily find the real reason, I want to know your opinions though :)

Absolute origin is lost in time. Probably started way back when tattooing started. Ancient Egyptians stained their nails with henna. Aztecs painted pictures of eagles on their nails at times. Modern nail varnish didn't start until the 1920's. In the 17th - 19th centuries various forms of colour were used including using scented red oils and buffing them with a chamois in the 19th century.

Why it's more or less a female thing I have no idea. Men at various times in history have been almost as garishly dressed as women but this doesn't seem to be one of those periods.
