Is the EPL dying (agree or disagree)?

I know this is a controversial question but try to follow my thought. Last year we've seen the Spanish and Portuguese teams dominating Europe, with Man United being the intruder. However, United was lucky of not having to face Real on the semis. This year United and City were knocked out early on the CL and went to the Europa League, only to lose to medium teams like Bilbao (8th in the Spanish League) and Sporting Lisbon (5th in the Portuguese League). For the first time in many years there is only 1 English team in the quarter finals of European Competitions. At the same time Spain has 5 teams, Germany has 3 and Portugal has 2. England is only on a pair with Italy, France, Holland, Ukraine and Cyprus! The last three winners of the Golden Boot (Ronaldo, Messi and Káká) all play in Spain and the two best managers (Guardiola and Mourinho) are there. Not looking to be a hater because I was a great fan of the EPL. I just want to know weather you agree or disagree with this and why. Best explanation gets BA

The Spanish league is the premier league in the world as of right now. People always say the EPL is better from top to bottom, while Spanish league is top heavy (RM and Barca). This has recently been put to shame by Bilbao, who is a great team, beating Man U easily, as well as Valencia playing well, and Sevilla. Who won Europa title last year? Exactly. It has been coming the past two-three years. RM and Barca are on a totally different level then the rest of the teams in Europe.

You can even look at the players in each league (as you mentioned) to compare. Who are the best players in the EPL this year? Well you have to include Mata and David Silva in the top 5. Where did they come from? A THIRD place team in the Spanish league (Valencia). Not to mention as you did above, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka. How about the other two players to be on the short list for player of the year: Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc, Villa. There is no comparison.

Everyone will see after the finals of the Champions League that the Spanish League is on top of the pile, whether it be Real or Barca. Even more so when they play each other.

first thing i would say is that in Europe on united really underachieved i think going out at the group stage City in their debut competition had the hardest group of all Arsenal went out at the same stage they did the previous season and Chelsea look like they will get through to the semi's. That said both city and united fell short against so called lesser teams Sporting Lisbon and Athletic Bilbao. I would view that as a worse defeat for City than United. Having watched Bilbao this season (i am a big fan of Bielsa and have followed him since he was coach of Argentina) neither Real Madrid or Barcelona (who needed a 93rd minute equalizer from Messi after a shambolic mistake in their own area) I consider Bilbao an excellent cup team as the kind of pressing they exhibit is extremely taxing and so is more suited to the one off nature found in cups than the consistency required to perform in the league. I still feel that England will remain a force in Europe and at the moment this is more of a blip than a trend however there are certain aspects of the game that are more valued in Europe than in England bigest of those being possession and so even so called lesser teams in Europe tend to better than the so called bigger teams in England at it but money talks and there is a lot of money in England so will have an advantage over most of the competition in that respect.

Its just had one bad year, every league goes through bad patches in europe. When your on top its very difficult to stay there because other teams try everything they can to match you and look for any weaknesses you have and create ways of exposing them. The spanish teams in particular have exploited the english teams inability to deal with the their sharp passing and central play. But with the money in the english game there isn't much chance of it dying anytime soon, although the FFP should even thing out. I disagree that la liga has the best two managers though. Pep has managed one team at a time when they are the best in the world he inherited most of the team.

I wouldn't use the term dying as that means it can never come back.

Transitional period is probably more accurate given that's what a few of the big clubs are going though.

Bar City who have only recently started to be considered a real team after significant investments, they shouldn't be included in the strong past of the EPL but they are definitely going to be seen as one of the future giants of the League. I'll get back to them later..

Going to the English teams that have been regulars in major European competitions in recent years, we have United, Arsenal and Chelsea. If you really dissect these three teams in terms of footballing performances, it's easy to see they've all had better days. All three clubs are going through a significant rough patch in their own way.

For United, it's a transitional period which involves them introducing new young players and beginning to part with the what the last dominant generation had for offer. Giggs and Scholes are ageing and the time has come for United to begin to replace them. But we haven't seen these replacements come into midfield alone, we've seen a new 20 year old keeper come in. We've seen the coming of age of Jonny Evans who has stepped up in the absence of Vidic. We've seen Smalling and Jones play vital roles this season in a tarnished midfield which includes the ageing and injury-improned Rio Ferdinand along with our injured skipper. We've seen youth academy lads Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly come into the squad and rip it up with every performance they've given us. So this is a significant time for United given the frailties they've faced this year in player options given the injuries. Generally I think they've done well given the situation.

Arsenal lost 3 world class players in Clichy, Fabregas and Nasri, and they hardly even replaced them with matching quality. They've been in a terrible state at the back with injuries over the season to almost all of their defenders. They haven't had the top class midfield supply they've been used to with Nasri and Fabregas in the squad and have had to settle with Song, Rosicky and Arteta. On the plus side they have had the amazing form of RVP which has been their silver-lining. But that doesn't escape the fact that they have had to adapt significantly after already being a team lacking quality depth. The key injury to one of their most key players last season in Wilshere has been a significant blow as well. But fortunately they have had the impressive Ox step up brilliantly at such a young age. So Arsenal were going through a tough time last season, imagine now when they lose 3 key players how they must adapt? Yet they have still managed to stay in the top 4 and I must give plaudits to Wenger for that, didn't think he could do it.

Chelsea are an interesting story as well. As we know, they were being experimented with a highly rated young manager, but things didn't quite work out there. Should AVB have been sacked? In my opinion it was harsh given the squad he was forced to inherit. He has inherited guys that Mourinho first brought to Chelsea close to 10 years ago and still has to rely on many of them. Ultimately he came in with a squad of players he couldn't work with and hardly had enough to get the guys he wanted. Chelsea have always been a project for so many years and their current squad consists of players that 8 different managers wanted. Next season when a new manager is allocated and the squad is trimmed, Chelsea and their new man will have the opportunity to start again with new signings and new looking Chelsea. Again, much like United, I believe they are in the depths of another transitional period.

So the 3 clubs who were England's best hopes for Europe in recent years have been going through a significant rough patch which will take 1, 2 or maybe even 3 seasons to get over. I have no doubt that they will once again rise once the squads firmly get into this new generation of players. This happens to league, just look at the Serie A for example. They once were the best in the world, they fell and now we begin to see them rise again. I have no doubts that the EPL will rise. Also, it may not be for many years, but La Liga will go through a similar where they're quality will drop too. It's happened before and it will all happen again, that's football.

Now, going back to City. They've built a fantastic team, but have no experience in Europe. They have no experience winning any major silverware in recent years either. So for them, it's more an experience thing rather than the need for squad building. Once they start getting significant silverware in their cabinet, they will truly be able to compete with the bigger clubs in the world in the bigger competitions.
