When celebrities go on late shows, is there any monetary transaction?

Obviously actors/actresses appear on late shows like Jay Leno and Dave Letterman when their movies are coming out. Often times other random yet interesting people come on the show at random times. Do movie studios/actors pay to get on these shows? Or do networks/shows have to pay the celebrities to come on the show? Or is it basically a win win for everyone so that no one pays?

My guess is that for the lesser known people (non-celebrity), the late show may pay for at least the flight and hotels, but I wonder about any other type of payment for non-celebs and celebrities.
