1998 ford escort p1443?

I have a 1998 Ford escort with 140k on it. The check engine light is on and the code is p1443. Most of the postings i find on the internet are for a 1997 escort. My questions are: How similar are the two vehicles? What steps can be taken to troubleshoot the issue? I have replaced the gas cap and PCV valve as recommended solutions i found online. The remaining solutions deal with the purge sensor and leaky hoses but i am not sure if the canister is in the engine compartment or at the gas tank. I want to try and replace as many parts as i can myself prior to taking it to a mechanic so i can at least eliminate some of the troubleshooting.

P1443 indicates a mechanical fault in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Purge Flow System. A lot of the time this is due to a loose gas cap, but you already dealt with that.

The other things you can look for are damaged vapor hoses between the fuel tank and carbon canister. Check for a cracked or broken carbon canister or fitting(s).

You'll need a scan tool to check the EVAP system more thoroughly but the purge valve is a common problem.

You may have already found the problem with the PCV or gas cap but you need to reset the computer with a scan tool or disconnecting the battery for an hour and then reconnecting it.
