Does anyone else read books by the lesser knowns?

I find the works by authors who have either been forgotten, overlooked, or never given much of a reason to exist except to publish "dead" books (a book that is published only to sit lonesomely on a library shelf)--to be of interest. Example: I greatly admire Jon Hassler; does anyone else read him? Or Theodore Dreiser (has he been completely forgotten?) Or Thomas Hardy--so darn good! I greatly admire Pete Dexter and Ferrol Sams and Lillian Smith and Carson McCullers and Elizabeth Spencer. Any one else? And Carolyn Doty and Dave Eggers and Ha Jin. This is only a few!

I haven't heard of those authors (I will check them out though), but I do agree with you. I think the lesser known authors can still be interesting, even if there isn't much of a hype around them. Some of them even write better than more well known authors.

I don't discriminate by author, I tend to read what synopses look good. I don't just read books because there is a hype about them but I don't rule them out because of their hype either. I try to keep an open mind.

I do agree that just because there isn't hype about lesser known authors, it doesn't mean that they aren't any good! I think they should be given a fair shake of the dice.
