Question About Hearing Voices?

A friend of mine is severely schizophrenic and she hears voices but i've never been sure; do schizophrenics hear voices like everyone can hear their own inner voice (cuz you know how you can sort of hear your own thoughts) or do they hear them as if the voices are from people who are right next, in front or behind them (externally). Or is it different for everyone? I have tried asking my friend but she an can never answer me properly, she starts talking about stuff coming from the wall and all sorts. It's just always bugged me so if you know, could you let me know? Thank you :)

Everyone is different, no case of schizophrenia is the same. My friend has schizophrenia and she says the voices she heard were external and internal. The external voices sounded like a group of men saying things around her head, like the voices were circling her head and sometimes they were coming from the walls, or the floor and sometimes the voices became visual. The internal voices she said were inside her head and made her want to rip her own brain out for them to stop. She has never been able to explain the internal ones as much as the external ones.

I have bipolar disorder and I have heard voices before, they have been internal and external. The internal voices sound like a man, talking to me, telling me to do things or calling me bad names. The external voices feel like they come from the walls or all around me.

The voice you hear in your head is your own whereas the voices people hear in psychosis (schizophrenia/bipolar/depression) are voices of someone else, they do not sound like their own voice at all, they have a certain voice, they can be male or female, it could be anyone and in some people its more than one voice, it can be many. The voices usually tell them to do things like harm themselves or someone else, or to do things that are against the law. The voices are uncontrollable and make you lose touch with reality which means you have no idea they are not real and you have no idea what actually is real anymore. People with schizophrenia believe the voices are real and have no idea that they are ill in anyway.

    Hope this helps.

    Examples of Hallucinations

--Hallucinations are as real as any other experience to the person with schizophrenia. As many as 70% hear voices, while a lesser number have visual hallucinations.

--Auditory hallucinations can be either inside the person's head or externally. When external, they sound as real as an actual voice. Sometimes they come from no apparent source, other times they come from real people who don't actually say anything, other times a person will hallucinate sounds.

--When people hear voices inside their heads, it is as if their inner thoughts are no longer alone. The new voices can talk to each other, talk to themselves, or comment on the person's actions. The majority of the time the voices are negative.

    Examples of Delusions

The most common type of delusion or false beliefs are paranoid delusions. These are persecutory in nature and take many forms:

--Overpowering, intense feeling you are being watched, followed, and spied on (tracking devices, implants, hidden cameras)

--Thinking that something is controlling you- i.e. an electronic implant

--Thinking that people can read your mind/ or control your thoughts

--Thinking that your thoughts are being broadcast over the radio or tv

There is a difference between an 'inner monologue' that everyone has- things like mentally commenting on others opinions, appearance, running through errand checklists and random thought and the voices heard by schizophrenics. Those voices usually are incessant and are focused on hateful or hurtful actions- self harm, suicide, paranoia, etc. But you are correct- we all hear an inner monologue.

My mom has this, and with hers she just hears voices in her head telling her things, such as she's a bad person and everything is her fault. It doesn't always have to be things like, " go kill some one" or " I'm watching you" something along those lines. The voices vary. I'm not sure if they hear their own voice or anybody else's but they do hear them, some hear them as if the person is standing in front of them or some hear it just as their mind telling them things. Others also see things, which is really common. Just try not to tell her that she's crazy, play along with her, it will make her feel like she's not alone, if she says she see's something, tell her you see it too but its not gonna hurt you or something like that. By telling a person like that, you don't hear or see it, it really just gets them mad, alot of times Schizo can lead to being bi polar.

Sometimes they hear them inside their own head, sometimes they're an exterior voice. They're very intrusive and bothersome.

Anyone with schizo has different symptoms, they go in stages so please take care of your friend. They can hear voiced to have full blown hallucinations.
