how to hatch an egg? HELP?
I'm now wishing I hadn't, but I found a nest on the ground with an egg in it and I took it.. I have no way to return it, and I've decided I am going to take care of it, and try my best to hatch and care for it.. I first need help identifying what kind of bird's egg it is. It looks very similar to these, http://www.flickr.com/photos/25543802@N04/49149576... , except it may be a bit smaller and a bit pointier at the top.
Also, I set up a box with wood shavings (the kind for small rodents), a cup of water (to try to keep it humid), and a lamp. I put the nest in and am keeping the lamp on as often as possible (The lamp gets pretty hot, don't wanna cook the little guy).
I know it's really hard to hatch an egg, but I at least have to try. Any tips would be very appreciated! Thanks.
-__-. really? i had no idea. i meant how to incubate it properly.
To people who have a real, helpful answer, I did a little more research, and believe it is a Chipping Sparrow.

I'll actually answer your question, my friend. First of all, make sure that the egg is at a constant temperature of 100 degrees Farenheit. Keep a thermometer in there.
Second, turn it, flip it every hour. If it is alive, it might adhere to the side of the shell if kept still too long. Make sure the fat end is pointed up.
Third, you can see if it is alive via a process called 'candling'. Take a small, powerful LED light and go into a very dark room. Hold the light against the egg so that all the light is focused on it. You may need to blot out the rest of the light so you can see. Turn the egg until you can see inside. If it is dead, you may see nothing or you may see a red blood ring. If it is alive, you will see numerous veins and possibly the embryo, which will be a dark lump that moves and wiggles on occasion.
I can't tell you how old the egg is or when it will hatch. But I can tell you that for up to a day before it hatches, you may hear tiny peeps and scratches coming from inside. Try to be there when it hatches.
Lastly, you can email me at the address below for step-by-step instructions on how to care for the chick when it hatches, and a recipe for a good baby bird food. Please contact!

Eggs bought in supermarkets, even the loose selection ones, are laid with the help of hens that have not have been given a fowl (cockerel) in with them as a result they have in no way mated and as a result the eggs are no longer fertile and could in no way hatch. comparable is going for duck eggs. you will possibly prefer to purchase some fertile hatching eggs from somebody who has a fowl/drake in with their birds. you will discover that there is plenty extra to incubating eggs than the main appropriate temperature. you prefer the main appropriate humidity additionally (this ought to be adjusted to a extra robust % 3 days formerly hatching once you end turning the eggs). there have been situations of eggs hatching after refrigeration yet hatching eggs should not be saved in a refrigerate. in reality till incubation starts off there isn't any embryo besides. I save my hatching eggs in a cool place (around 13-18C) and turn them two times an afternoon extremely purely over a million/4 turn regardless of the undeniable fact that back in the night. think of to your self why do you elect to hatch eggs? what's going to you do with the resultant chicks/ducklings? Do you need to maintain them or sell them? What in the event that they hatch and that they are all male? you will possibly desire to think of forward.

basically, once the egg cooled down for a while, as very likely in your case, it will cease to hatch no matter what.
