J.K. Rowling's next book is called The Casual Vacancy. Thoughts? Are you going to read it?

The press release just came out

http://leakynews.com/jkrs-new-book-titled-the-casu...

------

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

------

What do you think? Are you going to read it just because J.K. Rowling wrote it? Are you going to wait to see what friends/critics say before buying it? Are you afraid it will be no good, or are you sort of evilly hoping it will be no good (schadenfreude, after all)?

Answer any or all questions :)

I'm very interested in reading it! It seems like it's going to be more of a comedic novel and have elements of humor in it. Rowling has a very dry sense of humor, which I love her for. The Harry Potter books were hilarious at some points, mostly involving Quidditch scenes or moments in the Burrow.

I'm probably going to read it even if the reviews are terrible, just out of curiosity. This is the writer of the books which hugely impacted my childhood, so I don't think I'll be able to resist it. I'd love to see how her style changes, if it changes. We already know she knows how to write darker elements, and we also know she's not cut out for romance at all.

Overall, I have high expectations for Jo. If she doesn't meet them, I'll move on and still love the Harry Potter books as much as I did before, though perhaps I won't buy any further books from her. If the book is amazing, which I hope and expect it will be, then she will continue to be among my favorite writers. :)

I hope beyond all reason that it will be fantastic. And I do believe that it will be at least good. I really believe that Rowling is a very talented writer, but I'm also really apprehensive to see how her writing translates to an older audience. We *have* seen how her writing transformed throughout the seven HP books to be directed at a slightly older audience with each book, so that, along with the fact that she dealt very well with some heavy themes throughout the book, makes me think that it will be good.

However, I'm probably going to wait at least a little while before getting it. I might ask for it for my birthday or something. I do want to know what everyone else thinks of it before I buy it (because if I read it, I'll very likely buy it). But I don't know! I might get more excited as new information comes out nearer to September 23 and then end up buying it right then. I think it's too early to tell how I'll feel months from now, honestly, hahaha.

I will read it just because J. K. Rowling wrote it, yes. We've only seen the Harry Potter series from her so far, and I've been dying to see what else she can do. If I'm disappointed with it, it's not going to lessen my respect for her or the Harry Potter series in any way, so of course I'll read it. I've got nothing to lose.

The description is a bit vague, but it does sound like something that I could see myself enjoying a lot. And I really like the name 'Pagford'...

I will give her book a try. I am not one of them people that reads a book because one of my favourite authors like Stephen King wrote it, I read it if I think it has a good plot and it seems like it does. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and most people are. It will be a good book because coming from J.K Rowling's imagination it could make a change in her career that she can do better than just children's books.

Okay, first of all, I'm really excited and quite frankly shocked to death. I honestly, honestly thought she would not publish anything else. It seems pretty risky, but I trust that she wouldn't publish anything that shouldn't be published, and we all know she isn't doing it for the money! Now, to be 100% honest, it sounds a little boring, a little intriguing, and I think I would debate reading it if I didn't know who the author was. I'd lean towards not, I think, so to answer the second question, yeah, I'm pretty much going to read it just because Jo wrote it. I'm not waiting, I want to read it for myself before I hear a word of what other people think. That way I can judge it myself with no outside influence. I'm not really scared that it won't be good because I can't imagine her writing something bad, but I'm terrified to bits of what it would do to her if it was bad. Imagine something like that destroying everyone's respect and idolism of Jo. It would kill me to see something like that happen. So while I'm confident that it will be good, and while I know the quality of the writing will be unbelievable, there's still that part of me that says "but what if?" and it is pretty scary.

    So...good luck Jo!

I'll definitely be reading it, can't wait! Jo is a huge inspiration to me, as a former struggling single mother and a strong, successful woman. She is intelligent beyond words and I am sure that the book will be brilliant; it sounds really unique and strange and nothing like Harry Potter (apart from the fact that the main character's name rhymes with 'Harry' lol). I doubt I'll love it quite as much as HP, but I'll give it a read as soon as it come out for sure.

Yes. Normally I find that when I like one book by an author, chances are, I'll like the others, even if they aren't even close to relating to one another.

I definitely have plans to read this book when it comes out, unless I hear horrible things about it. And even in that case, I'll still read it so I can see for myself. I really hope it turns out well. Part of me is a little skeptical because it's entirely different from Harry Potter. But I believe writers can be versatile and write different things. I don't expect it to measure up to Harry Potter, but I do have fairly high hopes for it.

I'll definitely be reading it before I read any reviews. I prefer to make up my own mind, and too many reviewers give more information about the story than is necessary.

The more I consider a new Rowling book, the less expectation I have about it one way or another. I'm interested to see how she writes when adults are the intended audience.

LOL. Barry. That's like Harry with a B.

    Anyways.

I probably will read it and see how well she wrote it and all that. Yeah I'm reading it because she wrote it. I'm not a huge fan of hers, or a fan at all, but I'd like to see how she does in comparison.

Absolutely! I never thought I'd like Harry Potter but I did - because of her writing... Not to read it because it's not part of the HP saga would be pretty narrow minded.. for anyone over 16 years of age anyway....
