What is so good about World of Warcraft?

At the behest of several of my friends, I decided to give this game a go. But... What's so good about it? I don't see any aspect about the game that I don't prefer in other, free MMORPGs. And don't say it's better on higher levels, because where games are concerned, first impressions count. Especially games that want to take a monthly fee from me.

Update:

Okay, when I say I like things in other games, I mean actually everything. The graphics and art style, the combat system, character development, everything. Should I just stick to the free MMOs that I prefer?

Update 2:

Oookay then. I prefer the realistic fantasy graphical style of the likes of Karos Online, and the immersive character progression and combat systems of Atlus's Imagine. WoW just seems so... dumb-downed to me, for what they're asking for. Maybe I just answered my own question.

We can't tell you without having a more complete expression of your experiences. What do you prefer in these other MMORPGs? What are you looking at, what are you trying? What do you want in the game?

Do you want us to just give you a spiel on how we love WoW and why? I could do that, but I won't, since I know everybody has different things they like, so I'd rather see where you are coming from first than act like some sort of marketing smurf.

But no, I don't consider that first impressions matter, in fact, I'd say they are quite misleading, and that if I judged MMORPGs, especially free ones by the initial experience, I'd probably quit them even faster.

Edit: Do ignore the people who are just trolling though, they're the same everywhere.

Edit: Yet you're not saying what you like, just describing components. All of those things are in every game, but what do you like about them in your other games? Especially when you're talking about art and graphics, giving some guidance to why you like it might be helpful. If you like say, "Super-realism" then we'll know that WOW's more cartoony style isn't for you.

As for the other things, we don't even know how far you've gotten in the game, so what can we tell you about the combat system or character development that you don't know? What do you think it's missing?

When you just say "everything" you're basically putting the burden on us. Well, as I said, I'm not a marketing droid. I'd rather talk with you like a person, and as a person, let's say I'm cooking a meal, would I rather hear you say "I don't like spicy food" or "I don't like any of this food" ? The one gives me something I can react on, the other does not.

But if you want to play with your friends, you'll have to play WOW or convince them to play something else. I doubt they'll pick the else.

My favorite part of WoW is the PvP (player vs. player). Also I've made a few good friends along the way and, I swear on my life, I met my husband playing WoW.

Adding on to my answer; I believe you can get a free trial of the game and see how you like it.

Well there is a lot good... but no game is going to fit the tastes of all people. If you prefer other games then of course stay with those. No use in spending money on something you aren't that into.

  • Nothing. The game used to be good but now it's just really outdated and is a big waste of money.
