A Good Free Text Edit Program?

I'm trying to help out a friend who has a Dell with Windows 7 on it. (I'm a Mac :)

I always thought those PCs came with some sort of free, basic text editing program, but hers doesn't seem to have one. (my Mac came with Text Edit). She has Microsoft Works, but only a trial version that she can't afford to buy.

I've looked online and see some options for free, personal-use software. (EditPad Lite looked good)

I was hoping to get some recommendations for the best programs in this category. Looking forward to any help and suggestions someone is willing to share.

Update:

Thanks every one. I feel stupid that I didn't know Open Office was available for PCs. I have it on my Mac and it's a great program.

I think I have enough to work with now. Thanks again. This is a great community.

OpenOffice is a widely used free office program; it gives a text editor and pretty much everything else in Microsoft office!
