Green Iguanas: Thinking about getting one?

* Money is not a problem, so please do not include this in your answer*

Hello. Ive been doing some major.major research on Green Iguanas and they are just gorgeous. I have 4 Crested Geckos and 11 snakes at the moment. I have big snakes, but not sure if im ready for an Iguana. Im 13 years old and I have a red tail boa who is getting.pretty.big. Ive had experience with large snakes (holding.them.since my red tail hasnt gotten large enough to say hes huge). Im very responsible, my 11 snakes are well taken care of.as well as my cresties. What do you guys think? Who here has one? Let me know about.your iguana! And any tips, advice etc.

I have one, he's pretty cool but when first getting one they could do a number of things, some can be calm (Pretty rare) some could be willing but still somewhat aggressive, while others may never be tame. It's a pretty wide jump. I got mine from a breeder with pretty tame adults, but he himself was pretty aggressive. It has token some months to get him to gain some trust, and every now and then he has his moments but has learned I am his source for food, water, light, and safety, so it's getting better. Try asking to handle before buying him.

Remember, at the age of two he will start getting very aggressive just because it is mating season, mine is going into it within a few months and I'm not sure how that's going to go, he's already aggressive enough; so you have to try and tame them before that (If he lets you) with out stressing him out. -They can be some dangerous animals with sharp teeth, claws, and that big heavy tail....

The caging is a BIG thing, money may not be a problem, but spacing probably is. We are turning an entire room and half of our back yard for him, they need a huge enclosure if you want a happy iguana, not that twenty gallon tank crap. The minimum for one is 6'x3'x6' and they also need some time out of that cage, they are very social with humans and enjoy sitting around the house with the person they bond with on the daily bases. -They also like to be out side, ON A LEASH...

Please, don't be stupid and get one thinking they can live there whole life in a tank with no interaction. -Also, consider buying from craigslist, some people have already tamed them and just don;t have proper time or space for them.

Handling a big snake is nothing like dealing with an untamed iguana, especially one during breeding season. You need to learn their body language inside out, understand each and every move or you can find yourself in trouble. Also remember that iguanas can live to 25 years so you need to think carefully what you will do with him when you go off to college etc. You can find all the details about how to care for them and much more here: http://reptile-parrots.com/forums/forumdisplay.php...

    Good luck with your decision.

I my self do not have an iguana but I have a savvanah monitor and lots of lizards and frogs. But my friend has a green iguana and I had to babysit it for 2 months. So I have a good idea of what they are like but I'm not very sure on caring from baby to adult althouh i have been there since he was brought home.

Okay so his iguana is pretty big they get to a quite big size and around the same size as my savvy . They're heads are quite creepy it's very big however they are strictly herbivores and will not eat mice or crickets unless they absolutely have too. I have handled his iguana in my house and it's pretty cool with it. It's very calm and predictable when moving unlike my savvy or bear dies. He will sit there and react slow and you don't have to worry about them. But if it's not tame they're a pain in the *** . I heard if they're untame there worse than monitors but they're quite easy to tame and they're more of a dog kind of pet than a dangerous pet. What they need to be housed in cn be quite cheap. You should use a a boreal cage (for cheap price) stick a uv light on the top and give him some shelves to climb on . Then all you need is at the bottom a tub of water and on the top a food bowl with veggies. They're quite cool to watch tbh and they love handling.

Good luck with one and your experience should be good enough and if your afraid of handling something large buy him as a baby and you'll not notice his growth and should be fine! Good luck and I hope you get one!
