    The theory is that nicotine increases dopamine levels in the body. Dopamine can stimulate pleasure centers in the brain with the 5 different dopamine receptors it has. When you stop smoking and have a lack of nicotine, Dopamine levels drop and the body starts having withdrawls from this change in chemistry.

    Hormones have yet not been detected for nicotine addiction. For all types of addictions, hypothalamic centers (for pleasure) are supposed to be responsible. These centers normally are activated by interactions with other brain centers but regular use of addictive substances makes these centers dependent on these abusive substances, reducing their interaction with other centers.
