Will the MLS be a 40 team league with teams in USA and Canada?

I think it will. 20 teams in the Western Conference. 20 teams in the Eastern Conference.

You can't split the Canadian rivalry with vancouver, toronto, montreal and maybe ottawa, so depending how the MLS deals with the teams and how the league is set up....will be quite interesting. There is just a lot of major markets to have a tier 2 or tier 3 teams.

Thoughts?

I don't think MLS will turn into a promotion and relegation league because there is just too much travel.

thoughts?

Update:

Ya, I agree. Somewhere between 30-32.

If we were to do a 16 team western conference, we would leave out 2 major markets.

1. VAN

2. SEA

3. POR

4. SJE

5. LAG

6. CHV

7. San Diego

8. RSL

9. COL

10. FCD

11. SAN Antonio

12. HOU

13. SKC

14. St. Louis

15. Minnesota

16. CHI

This leaves Milwaukee, Phoenix, Calgary, Edmonton, Austin, Oklahoma City, Sacremento, Winnpeg.

Maybe 34....since the markets left aren't really big, but still could support a team.

I don't know about 40 teams, but I can picture it getting up to 32 teams or so like MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. Perhaps the division would be along 4 regional conferences or divisions with divisional standing determining whether a team gets into the playoffs or not. I don't think Europeans realize just how big North America is sometimes.

Obviously it would require an unbalanced schedule and playoffs to determine a champion. Some soccer snobs feel that 20 teams is a magic number and that a balanced schedule is a must, but it doesn't make sense in the US and Canada. There's just too much ground to cover.

And pro/rel makes no sense here either. At least, it is not done in North American leagues. If implemented tomorrow, pro/rel would kill the league. Personally I like the salary cap and profit sharing. In the European leagues it's usually a battle of 2 to 5 powerhouses while the rest struggle to avoid relegation. Here every team has a real opportunity to win a championship based on how smart management, not money. It seems that European leagues are 100s of millions in debt as a result.
